RAISULI EXPLAINS. Moroccan Bandit Give Reason Why Ha Took McLean Prisoner. Tangier, Aug. In a ton statement to the correspondent of aa Ear lisb newspaper, Raisuli, the Moroccan bandit who is holding Caid Sir Harry MacLean a prisoner. blames the treachery of the sultan's government for his capture of Sir Harry.

Raisuli says that in the course of his negotiations with the man who is now his prisoner, previous his capture, he explained his grievances and Sir Harry promised him a safe conduct if he would go to Fes nd lay his troubles before the saltan, who would remedy them. He. accepted this offer, but while he was arranging for the Journey, government troops, ina'l-gated by the sultan's bad advisors. In the meantime Sir Harry MacLean had shown him a letter from the sultan, promising him safe conduct, but he had also secured a copy of another written by the sultan to his minister of war instructing him to attack Raisuli vigorously Unless he went to Fez. This, continues Raisuli. convinced him of the treachery of th sultan, and he therefore made a prisoner of the English cald. Sir Harry, Raisuli declares.

Is perfectly safe his hands. He did not capture him for money, but for justice, and this he hopes to secure by calling the attention of the British government to his grievances. Tonight the four-act drama, "How Women Ruin -Men" will be presented.

So much interest is being taken In the forthcoming presentation of "Lena Rivers" at the Majestic theatre on Thursday evening, that the assumption seems, warranted that the sale of seats will be unusually heavy. At all events arrangements have been matte to handle a very large crowd. The success of the play has been of unusual proportions. In fact, none of the book made plays of the last three ses-sons has had so great a measure of success and the work possesses many lasting qualities which guarantee it life for many years Miss Beulah who heads the cast, made a very close study of "Lena Rivers," and before the production of the pfsy went to Frankfort. Kentucky, and Slocumvllle, and visited all tho scenes mentioned in the book.

Great care was taken In giving the play tbe necessary atmosphere, and the production is a complete one. The first act scene is an exterior and is a very pretty one, laid In the bills of Massachusetts. The -1ant three are taken to the South and In three scenes are pictured tbe manners and life of that section so dear tq all our hearts. Cawthorne, to The Times, says: "The sacred concert at St John's Evangelical church on Sunday evening deserves more than a passing no tice, inasmuch as it was a positive revelation of what a young student can do who possesses natural talent and a determination to excel. Miss Helen Woytych. is undoubtedly a born artist Her violin playing has rarely been excelled by any concert player apeparing in this city. It is certainly due her as a matter of encouragement to say her playing was thoroughly ap preciated by the large audience pres ent, and she received unstinted praise for her fine work. If she continues to improve in the future as she has done in the past, she will not be long in taking her place among the notable Violinists of the day." CIRCUS HAS BIG THRILLER Automobile Somerset with Forepaugh I and Sells Bros. Show. I The automobile somerset, "Beyond the Limit," is the thriller this season with the Forepaugh and Sells circus which will be seen in Port Huron on August 19. I The act is a case of human daring and recklessness pushed almost to the point of certain death, and more wonderful yet, the feat is performed by a frail young French woman. Mile.

La Raque. There have been many circus thrillers of more or less meritL but they will all forgotten when the act of Mile, a Raque is seen. Start tng In the dome of the tent this French girl plunges down a steep tramway in a heary machine to within a few feet of the track, where a sharp upward carve sends automobile and rider high ia air. For a fraction of time the ponderous car pauses ia space, then turns a complete somerset and dashes, wheels down, to a spring platform. There is a brief of exquisite suspense to the actl that almost stops the heart of spectators, Nierves are tense almost to the Knapping point till relief comes with the crash of the heavy rubber wheels on the ground stage.

The act is so intensely sensational and thrilling, as to be entirely different and far remor- ed from asTihiss else ever seen. NEWS IN BRIEF.
