Port Huron MI Officers, chief clash in Detroit The Associated Press DETROIT It started with an letter urging Detroit anonymous to call in sick the day of a massive fireworks show.

A "blue flu" epidemic that would clearly hamper public safety efforts was called for. Though the mayor's office and police department said the sickout never happened Thursday, the letter illustrates the rising tension between the city's new police chief and the officers on the beat. It's a rift that appears to revolve around the chief's pledge to rid the department of corruption the union says doesn't exist. "I'm going (to) tell you right now, we are going to run off a lot of people because we've got some criminals that work for us here," Chief Jerry Oliver said. Marty Bandemer, president of the Detroit Police Officers Association, said if there were major problems in the department, "I can't believe it wasn't discovered before.

You don't chop down the apple tree if you find one bad apple." Oliver, 55, started in January, lured by new mayor Kwame Kilpatrick from the Richmond, department. In Richmond, Oliver impressed many by cracking down on violent crime and drugs. He expanded the force and created specialized units focused on problems such as street crime and auto theft. In Detroit, Oliver inherits a department that is under federal scrutiny following deadly police shootings of civilians, questionable treatment of prisoners and wholesale arrests of homicide witnesses.
