Fort Gratiot Township Fire Chief Richard Crull said the fire nearly destroyed the roof and caused heavy damage to the ceiling and floors of the second story.

He said no one was injured, although the house was occupied by Galbraith and his family when the fire started shortly after 7 p.m. "You could see the fire from two miles away," Crull said. His department is responsible for fighting fires in eastern Clyde Township. Crull said the fire was believed to have been started by a wood-burning stove in the garage. It then spread through the breezeway to the house.

He said the damage will be measured in the tens of thousands of dollars. Crull said the department called for aid from Clyde and Burtchville firemen after reaching the scene. More than 12,000 gallons of water were used to control the fire, he said. Crull said the firemen brought the fire under control about 8:30 p.m. He said there is extensive smoke and water damage to the house, but all the walls are still standing.
